Townhall signed him up and he's going to be writing regular posts. If we are going to have to suffer the indignities of a McCain presidency, or worse . . . , Fred's crisp, clear, conservative message may inspire the faithful just when we need it most. His inaugural post.
Spending some time on the campaign trail has confirmed a couple of thoughts I’ve had before I entered the Republican primary race.
First, conservatism is alive and well in America; don’t let anyone tell you differently. And by conservatism, I don’t mean the warmed-over “raise your hand if you believe …” kind of conservatism we see blooming every election cycle. No, I’m speaking of the conservatism grounded in principles based upon enduring truths: an understanding of the importance of human nature in the affairs of individuals and nations. Respect for the lessons of history, the importance of faith and tradition. The understanding that while man is prone to err, he is capable of great things when not subjugated by a too-powerful government. These are the principles that inspired our Founding Fathers, and resulted in a Constitution that delineated the powers of the central government, established checks and balances among the branches of government and further diffused governmental power by a system of Federalism.
Second, change – whether it “real change,” “bold change” or the “change we can believe in” variety others are selling – isn’t itself an innovative policy or a particularly strong leadership stance. In fact, from Burke to Buckley, there has been an acknowledgement that change in the political arena is inevitable and necessary, and we in the U.S. tend to experience it in regular, 2, 4 and 6 year intervals, so 2008 is hardly our first rodeo. The challenge for conservatives is calibrating whether the change being proposed is consistent with our principles and our philosophy, and whether that change is appropriate.
Our nation has some serious issues to work through for today … and for the next generation. Now isn’t the time for conservatives to be looking for a tailored message or a politically expedient route to victory if the end result is going to be the inevitable slide toward the liberalization and secularization of America, and the growth of government and loss of freedom that inevitably ensues. For us conservatives it must be about principles and policies that are grounded in freedom, free markets and the rule of law. That’s what I’ve been talking and writing about for the past few years, and that’s what I want to talk write about here on Townhall and in the new Townhall Magazine.
I joined Townhall and am writing exclusive commentaries for Townhall Magazine because I see them elevating the discourse on issues based on these principles -- smaller government, individual liberty, standing for common values that have become all too uncommon, a strong national defense and, most of all, an optimism and belief in America.
I’m glad to be back here in familiar territory, and we’ll be talking to you soon.
Dang. What might have been.

Big league politics requires certain skills beyond just having good ideas, and being a politician isn't the only way to make a valuable contribution to the political process. Thompson is a very smart guy who just isn't a very good politician, so I'm glad to see him getting back into the fray by other means. He's just doing it, without getting sidetracked with a bunch of coulda' woulda' shoulda'.
He didn't pander and told people the truth. The biggest problem with that is the people said that's what they wanted and discovered after the fact that they'd rather have the pretty speeches and pandering.
Had those same people admitted that from the get go, I doubt Fred would have gotten into the race.
He's a good man and a smart man. People would do well to listen to him, even if it isn't all the fluff and stuff they want to hear.
Amen -- Fred was on Fox news this morning.
He called Obama naive at least twice.
Give him hell Fred.
He also made the point that McCain is on the right side on the issues that are crucial to the survival of the United States. He is right related to national security. Trashing the economy with the green nonsense and letting the illegal aliens break the rules -- well Obama would give us worse than McCain on those issues.
Fred speaks truth and I am not going to get the perfect candidate this year - -the difference is between the most liberal/socialist/NAIVE/Marxist -- Obama or a candidate I agree with part of the time.
Forever a Fred(heart)head

...to that Fred Fox and Friends appearance: Fred on F&F
He explains in simple terms why even though we don't agree on McCain, he's our best hope for the future.

That was a very good interview. It gives some credibility to the idea that he could be more powerful now that he is no longer a candidate. One thing the party and this administration has always lacked is an articulate spokesman who is more than just a mouthpiece spouting talking points. Rush Limbaugh is neither one, because he's more of a spokesman for Conservatism in general. Tony Snow never really got a chance.
I must qualify my comment by adding that I didn't think this first column was particularly noteworthy, other than that it was the first one.

...RNC Chairman. That's where he's best...in the battlefield of ideas.
That, or one of many other positions of leadership, would be awesome.

Now if I could just get some consolation from the female Fredheads who assured me I'd be appreciated for having Fred's physical size and something like his intellect. I guess we never talked about the importance of also having Fred's wealth as a necessary factor.
This is an insulting and misogynist comment that reduces the support of Fred Thompson by the female gender to being based upon stereotypes of masculine attributes instead of the conservative principles FDT represents.
Now I could make some comment that just because men(?) such as Lester are too often vertically challenged when it comes to thinking, please do not become confused and transfer that shortcoming to all females.

Though I think he was slightly jesting :-)

I replied to lester not simpson. I was not offended by simpson's remark. Lester is the offending poster.

Not my fault if you don't.
Though I fail to see what was wrong with that one, either... Must be my thick male skull.

If only Fred had run a campaign that was "just like everyone else's" more folks might have voted for him.
That is the best thing about Fred. He isn't just like everyone else.
For the next 8 years, we need to train up someone just like Fred that can run a campaign just like Billary or Barry.
Dreams are ok, aren't they?
"Government of the people, by the people, for the people."

"I might've voted and given money to Fred if..."
He showed that he wanted the job.
He ran a better campaign.
He had a better sound system.
and of course, my favorite:
More people were voting for him and giving him money.
Excellent points.
I have thought that perhaps he did make a tactical mistake regarding his timing as he entered the race. He needed to be in those early debates. Who knows? Maybe he would have eclipsed the Huckster, since there probably wouldn't have been room for two folksy Southerners. The way things broke, Huckabee got a significant head start and he pushed Fred out at the far turn.
Speaking of the Huckster, would anybody be saying any of this stuff if he were the one who's going to write a column on Town Hall? I don't think so.

We need to find the next generation's conservative leaders and groom them by putting them in city councils and state legislatures. We need them to establish themselves with a record to run on. We also need to teach them how to get their message across not only by traditional means but by non-traditional means. Look at the effect that the internet is having on the current election. Obama's team got the jump on everyone with that using the social networking sites as well as youtube! What's going to be next big thing??
Dreams waste time. Action begets change. We need to start working for change that conservatives can believe in.
Perhaps Fred can take the mantle for conservative thought. He appears much better at espousing the principles than converting them to a campaign.
Newt has indeed been marginalizing himself lately. He has fallen into a tendency to wander across the aisle. We really don't need two leaders like that. Maybe Fred just needs to take Newt for a long walk around the farm while he points out the facts of Conservative survival. Then they'd both be on point.
Democrats: Abandoning Allies, One Country at a Time.
So good to hear a positive voice for conservatism for a change. We should try that here, more. It's the libs job to be in chaos. Fred Thompson could really help our cause if utilized .
Amen to the voice of conservatism in this election. This is the man that could have had us all fired up about 2008. He always sounds presidential when he speaks ::sigh::. Well maybe he can primary McCain in 2012 and save the Party before we run off the BiPartisan cliff with Johnny Mac.
The trouble with our friend McCain isn't that he's ignorant, but that he knows so much that isn't so.

Lets hope he writes better than he campaigns.
It's not a political party, it's a way of life. It used to be represented by a political party and there are still some few within that party who would advance conservative ideals, but let's not forget:
Conservatism begins and ends with personal responsibility. It can't die. Although people who hate people like us want it to, the best they can do is dim its light for awhile.
We'll survive this by relying on our inner conservatism rather than waiting for the government to do it. A few comments up someone said something about "grooming" our young people. How about we continue to act like the conservatives we are and provide an example rather than "groom" them? Give them a solid foundation for their future regardless of where life takes them? Obama was "groomed" by Chicago politics and is an empty suit as a result.
It's not the party that makes conservatism. It's the conservatism that makes the party. If the Republican Party doesn't want to be that party, so what?
Remember back to the founding. How many political parties rose, fell, then died off completely before we got stuck in the rut of the two party system? How many parties are there right now that we never hear of? Did you know there's a Conservative Party in New York and Sean Hannity is going to leave the Republican Party for it? Maybe, for once, NY realized something before the rest of us.
As Fred says, conservatism in America is alive and well, although the health of the party that used to represent it is not faring so well.
